Entry 3

THE SAGA CONTINUES : ).

OK well, the story is long and it's NOT over yet. I was so excited about going to a region where many Zapotec live. That is not going to work out for this October trip. Perhaps in January another trip will be scheduled for us to go. For now, the two contacts, Jonathan and David E (a Zapotec) will be going the end of November beginning of December to help them bringing in supplies and other help that will still be needed.

My ticket was already purchased when I learned of the news that we would not be able to go because of the trouble with the rains and the roads. I was panicked and sad. Buying the ticket on-line I know that it is not refundable!!!! YIKES. So we have set out to see what other mission programs I could be a part of in Mexico City. I had already planned on visiting a missionary school for women, but it will not be possible to spend all of my time there. It would have to get board approval and there is already tension within the board so now is not a good time for that.

So I was ready to give up!!!! However, when I asked the ladies from Salvation Army to pray about the trip a while ago, the Captain, Lynda Thornhill had mentioned that there was a Children's Home in Mexico City. We had talked about me visiting, but I told her I didn't know where it was in relation to where I would be - Mexico City is HUGE. But last week when the discussion about great places to minister came up, Jonathan mentioned that they had gone to a Children's Home in the city for Christmas to sing and give out treats. He said it was a Salvation Army home!!!!! I could not believe it. My response was immediate - "I'm part of the Salvation Army here and we have supported a Children's home in Mexico City." We wondered if it were the same as the one Captain Thornhill mentioned. So far I have not gotten definite news, but it appears to be the same one and is only 30 minutes from where I would be. This would be so thrilling for me. The first time I signed up to go to Mexico, I was to be going to a Children's Home in Guadalajara. The mission board I was with, told a group of us that trip had been canceled and had us come to Mexico City. Those who know me know how important ministering to the least of these is to me. How I love working with all children. This would be such an amazing turn of events that would be a tremendous blessing. The Lord does work in mysterious ways!!!!! There is still nothing definite. The Captain of the Salvation Army here has sent a letter to her Major with the information about me wanting to work at the Children's Home during my time there. She is waiting to hear back as I also am. It is truly in God's hands, but what better place for it all to be. He knows the future; He alone is Sovereign and controls all with His gracious, competent, and powerful wisdom. I'm praying those involved will hear from Him and it will all work out according to His perfect will. Please pray with me and for me. I'm really excited about this opportunity; pray that I won't get my hopes too high : ), but will just trust completely in Him. He is good!!!! Thanks for all of your prayers. I'm supposed to be leaving soon - so I'll let you know what is going on as soon as I find out : ).

THE STORY "How It All Began"

*Photobucket *                                         * Photobucket*  Here is the story of how it first started. This was written a few years ago for a mission fair at JIPC. Since it was already written there really is no reason to re-do it : ). Jack was not in the picture then so he is not included in this story, but his entrance onto the scene is a story for another time : ). The following is the text from years ago:

In the summer of 1987, I went out with Stono Baptist Church to Jenkin’s camp. There were a guy and girl taking out groups from the Charleston Baptist Association. Immediately, my heart jumped inside when I saw the little children and their excitement to learn. By the end of the time, I saw that not much was made of the wide door of opportunity and was sad. But my prayer then was that I would be able to teach children like that one summer. Little did I know what God already had planned. The next year I was a sophomore at Columbia Bible College, one of my friends was Angela Thomas from Charleston. We were just about out for the summer, in the midst of exams and all the end of the year craziness, when Ange asked me if I’d be interested in teaching out at Migrant camps on John’s Island. Her mom had been asked by Reverend Richard McQueen if Ange would be interested, and since she was unavailable and knew that I lived on John’s Island asked if I might be willing. It seems the person scheduled had bailed last minute and they were trying to find someone. But I know better!
Writing this now April 27, 2005, I can still remember being on Petty Hall like it was yesterday. I was not only willing – it was an answer to a prayer I’d forgotten that I prayed! So with little time to prepare and not knowing exactly what I was getting into, I began what would become the most fulfilling, difficult, heartbreaking, rewarding, joyful, sorrowful, love-filled, exciting summer days and nights : ) of my life. God so perfectly put it all together. It started with CBA, then my local church, Samaritan’s Purse after Hugo when I met Franklin Graham and eventually led to meeting Mr. Henry Meeuwse at James Island Presbyterian Foundation. Teaching children the powerful, life-changing Word of God gives me some of the greatest joy in my life. I also love the food, culture and language : ). The children and their families have become a very rich part of my life. I’m so thankful the other person was unable to go out that summer. I’m sure in God’s sovereignty He had something well suited to him for that summer, also. God’s love and control are boundless; I’m thankful He has given me the blessing of summers with so many wonderful people.

~ So there it is. That is how it began in 1987 as a seed, and then in 1988 as a dream fulfilled.
